Abstract In an effort to reaffirm the value of vocational education, the Quebec Ministry of Education launched the Skills Competition project in 1992. Patterned on the Olympic Games, these trades and technology competitions are much publicised and open to the public. They allow the graduates of vocational education to measure themselves against the best of their peers in the different fields. Behind the festive and grand nature of the competition lies an extraordinary commitment on the part of the teachers and the students. This research presents a context of teaching practices that have been renewed by the experience of the skills competition; collaborative practices of "shared work," of teaching practices both inside and outside the classroom, and within and beyond the scope of work. For the student, we see a new relationship to learning and to improving his practice.
